If there is one trend that is emerging in the world of investment, it is green investing. If you have never heard of this before, it aims to provide support for business practices that have a positive impact on the world around us. In this guide, we will reveal everything you need to know about green investing, what it is, and how you can use it for sustainable economic growth.

What is green investing?

Green investing is an emerging trend in the world of investment. It seeks to support company practices that have a positive impact on the natural environment. Typically grouped with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) or socially responsible investing (SRI) criteria, green investments concentrate on projects or businesses that are committed to reducing pollution, conserving natural resources, or other environmentally-conscious business practices.

This field is one that is relatively new, and there are a number of different opinions with regard to the criteria that should be applied. For instance, there are some people that would prefer to invest in businesses that promote equality irrespective of ethnicity or race. Others would rather funds that exclude businesses that support certain kinds of weapons or poor labor practices.

What are the different types of green investing?

Green investing aims to support company practices that have a positive impact on the natural environment. There are three different groups of green investing, which are as follows:

  • Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) – SRI is a type of strategy for individual investors who want to utilize their money to enhance society by supporting businesses that have a less-than-perfect record in terms of social or environmental concerns.
  • Environmentally Responsible Investing (ERI) – ERI involves investment in companies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote recycling, product alternative energy, or in another way show an interest in issues concerning the environment.
  • Area-Based Investments – Finally, we have area-based investments, which include the likes of international development, community lending and development, and green real estate. This is an area that tends to be less researched and vetted yet is starting to gain traction with investors. Green real estate investments include portfolios of properties designed to preserve the environment, for example, those that fit LEED standards or help conserve water.
